I cannot describe my joy and I would have written sooner, but I wanted to wait to hear how your son was doing. As I gleaned from your latest letter, you know that he is now married and I participated in his wedding service. I wished you could have been there as well. My joy would have then been much greater. You know that his wife belongs to our faith and as much as I know she is a righteous woman. She was born in Poland. Both of them came to visit me on the Fourth of July. And both of them are very healthy. Dear brother, I cannot write much about my family, only that I am much better off now that I am alone. My youngest daughter Marie and I are now taking care of our household. She is a seamstress and earns a nice salary. If I could only be with you all for one hour we would have much to talk about. I am sure you have already received note about everything else that’s going on here. I am closing my letter in the hope that these lines find all of you well and healthy. We received your letter and we are in the best of health and we hope these few lines also meet you in the best of health. We wish all of you luck and blessings a long and healthy life in the new year. We wish that Kathryn will meet a nice young man for a husband. According to your letter groceries are not as expensive here as they are over there, and salary is also better here. I wish I could be with you, but when poverty is as dominant again, I’d rather be over here. I have not yet seen the poor day in this country. It is not that I live in abundance, but if my family and I stay healthy, I would not to trade places with anybody from Bubsheim. It was very difficult over here or in the beginning, especially on account of the language. But now I can talk with anybody. That is why I find it much better over here than in the old land in a poor man has a terrible life over here just as much as over there. Late in the year I slaughtered two pigs. They weighed 665 pounds. And every day I can buy fresh beef. A poor man will not see any beef over there. If Teresa can send me her child I will receive it as as much as if it were my own. If I can find some money I will go later in the year toward the West in Nutt, Illinois and I will buy a piece of land. My father-in-law lives there. He has written me many times that I should come to him, because he is so happy there. I cannot report anything about Moser, because I have not heard anything from him in about two years. However if you would like to know more, I think I can find out where he lives. Please let me know how Ignaz Dreher is doing when you write me the next time. You were wondering if there are other people from our town here and there are quite a few. The closest ones are from Ratshausen and Schönberg. They are more than 300 people from Würtemberg in our town. My children speak both German and English. Our Anna has died on October 25. I did not go to the funeral, because my wife gave birth on October 23. It was a son. I am sending Sabine my daughter's portrait. We had it painted two years ago. If we stay healthy I will send you the summer a portrait with all three children. This is the last record I have for either one of them until Leonard's son Len Jr. and John's first son Jacob were both born in July 1878. Both babies were christened in Burlington. So they moved from Randolph County to Burlington Iowa sometime between Nov. 1875 and July 1878. By June 1880, Leonard appears to be in Charleston twp, Lee Co., IL, but John Kobus stayed in Burlington.

Dear mother it was not even my wish anymore to speak with you all verbally about this. If we can stay healthy for a few more years, I believe we will again speak with one another in person, so that when my children are bigger, I can continue with my work better and better. If my children stay healthy, I will send you their portrait later in the year. I will now have five and perhaps six children later this year. Dear sister Kathryn it is written in gods fourth commandment that it will be well with you and so I encourage you to think about that so that you can live together in peace, because it is also written that you will receive as you you were self care of, and I have experienced that myself. Concerning sending the certificate, I think it would be best, if you will generate such a certificate and send it to me. I will then add whatever is necessary. For I am sure, that all will be written correctly. I would also like to know how much it costs or what it is or where it comes from and how many marks of the old money it is worth. Through the above inheritance, I have given my brother-in-law to buy everything for sale, items, fields, meadows, wood and fields, which I and my housewife have currently announced and to say, with good reason, with this condition that Friedrich Kuolt, my Mother-in-law Anna Hauser, serving, paying for the favorite dish as it is made until the end of her life. But the above was done by purchase and for a total of 461 guilders. Wehingen, the 1st of October in 1697 Emigrant to America Leonhard Kuolt, born 23 Apr 1842 Son of Ignaz Kuolt, Weber and Genovefa Staller from Wehingen, who in 1856 was disobedient and stubbornly absent when he was obliged to recruit, his fortune was seized on January 31, 1859. Leonhard Kuolt married on January 28, 1867 in Ashland, Schuylkill County, in the state of Pennsylvania, Mrs. Eva Kucharski née Kobus, married to Michael Kucharski on August 18, 1884. Leonhard Kuolt died on March 27, 1883 in Warren, Iowa. The following children were born from this marriage: Mary born 13 Mar 1868 Josef born 15 Jan 1870 Johann born 22 Oct 1871 Wilhelm born 22 Oct 1874 Leonhard born [1]7 Jul 1878 Eva born 1 Apr 1881[3] State of Illinois, County of Washington This day, Maria Kobus, 59 years old, appeared before me, a public notary for the said county and Franz Dix, 33 years old, both residents of the above-mentioned county, which after they had been legally sworn by me, declared on the record as follows: The mentioned Maria Kobus declares that she is the mother of Eva Kucharski, the former wife of the late Leonhard Kuolt, that said Eva and Leonard Kuolt were married on the 28th day of January, 1867 in the Catholic Church at Ashland, Schuylkill County, in the state of Pennsylvania by John Buch, the pastor himself marrying them there, that her daughter in question lived as a member of the same in the family of the depositor and that the same and her husband named Leonhard Kuolt about two years after the said marriage continued to live as husband and wife with the depositor's family and that they then moved to Williamsport, PA, and there as a man and wife lived until March 1883, when he died, and also the clear depositor that seven children came from this marriage, six of which are still alive. The address of the depositor is Nashville P.O. Washington County, State of Illinois. Under the said Dix then learned that he was well acquainted with Eva Kobus before her marriage and that he still knows her well now, that same on the 28th day of the year 1867 in the Catholic Church at Ashland, County Schuylkill in the state of Pennsylvania by John Buch, the pastor himself was married there to Leonhard Kuolt that he lived about 300 yards from her father's apartment and she and her husband Leonhard Kuolt knew well, that he knew that the same men and women lived together and that children came out of their marriage. Leonard and Eva were most likely married in the St. Mauritius German Catholic Church in Ashland. This church was originally built in 1856, then was rebuilt in 1900 and just recently destroyed in 2015. St. Mauritius has been merged in with St. Joseph's (now "St. Charles Borromeo" parish) in Ashland. This church was under the diocese of Allentown, PA, which has very strict rules in place to guard their sacramental records for privacy and will not give out any copies nor information about any of their records, unless you are the person whose records you are requesting. Apparently these records are not microfilmed anywhere either.
